Jekyll And Mr Hyde Deconstruction - 1359 Words

In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson tells the story of a doctor who uses his medical and scientific knowledge to enable himself to do entirely as he pleases. Through Jekyll’s creation of his alter ego Hyde, Jekyll can do whatever he wants with no consequences. Ultimately, however, Hyde seems to overtake Jekyll, resulting in the death of both identities. For many readers, the final part of the story supplies satisfactory answers to enough of the questions to provide closure. In â€Å"Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case† (â€Å"Jekyll’s Statement† hereafter), readers learn about Hyde’s creation and Jekyll’s ultimately failed experiment. While the final part appears to answer many pressing questions in†¦show more content†¦Hyde is natural and human, livelier, and more express and single, unlike Jekyll’s imperfect and divided countenance. Unlike humans who are both good and evil , Hyde is pure evil. Even this cohesive description falters a little upon closer inspection for multiple meanings. Jekyll claims Hyde is both human and yet pure evil unlike other humans. Minor disruptions of meaning are present here, but the basic idea may yet remain. Jekyll also says his own countenance is imperfect; Jekyll’s wording seems to suggest in Hyde’s being Jekyll’s pure self’s opposite that Hyde is perfect, something with which Jekyll probably would disagree. Despite these minor issues, Jekyll presents readers with a sufficient introduction to Hyde; unfortunately, Jekyll’s perception of Hyde does not continuously mesh well with Hyde himself. Jekyll says at first that Hyde is himself, yet not long after this claim, his assertion begins to fall apart. When considering Hyde’s actions, Jekyll says that he â€Å"stood at times aghast before the acts of Edward Hyde† (1712). It seems one thing to experience surprise at oneà ¢â‚¬â„¢s own boldness or to behave in a way one thought difficult or impossible, yet to be â€Å"aghast† before the behaviors of one’s own self, as Jekyll claims Hyde is, seems somewhat ludicrous. Further, Jekyll then says that the sins belonged to â€Å"Hyde, after all, and Hyde alone, that was guilty. Jekyll was no worse† (1712-1713). Following in the Ways of Zen Buddhism I fell in love with the first Buddhist I ever met. That is to say I fell in love with a man who is a Buddhist. I, however, am not a Buddhist. I have faith in what I find to be right rather than committing to a religion that I would not wholeheartedly believe in. It would seem that a difference in our spiritual practices may be a strain on our relationship, but in truth our faith lies in similar areas. The biggest difference between us is that I lack the knowledge and self discipline to be a practicing Buddhist. In loving Matthew I also want to gain understanding in what it is he believes. The Noble Eightfold Path teaches three disciplines in wisdom, morality, and meditation. Wisdom, or panna , is learning to have the right view and thoughts. Morality, or sila , teaches to control your speech correctly, act correctly, and pursue a correct livelihood. Meditation, or samadhi , has you discipline your efforts, your mindfulness, and your contemplation. These teachings in qualities are meant to be practiced to obtain peace, and for some to travel the path towards Enlightenment. If only there had been someone to take care of, like Bonnie, she would have felt better. â€Å"I give up. So what is wrong?†Matt asked bluntly. Meredith was staring into the distance again. I’m the one who’s kept a secret from my friends al my life.† â€Å"Not any longer,†Elena said, and hugged her again. â€Å"At least there are no more secrets now,†Mrs. Flowers said gently, and Elena looked at her sharply. Nothing was ever that simple. And Shinichi had made a whole handful of predictions. Then she saw the look in the mild blue eyes of the old woman, and she knew that what was important right then was not truth or lies, or even reckonings, but simply comforting Meredith. She looked up at Stefan while stil hugging Meredith and saw the same look in his eyes. And that – made her feel better somehow. Because if it was truly â€Å"no secrets†then she would have to figure out her feelings about Damon. And she was more afraid of that than of facing Shinichi, which was saying quite a lot, real y. â€Å"At least we’ve got a potter’s wheel – somewhere,†Mrs. Flowers was saying. â€Å"And a kiln in the back, although it’s al grown over with Devil’s Shoestring. I used to make flowerpots for outside the boardinghouse, but children came and smashed them. I think I could make an urn like the ones you saw if you can draw one for me. But perhaps we’d better wait for Mr. Saltzman’s pictures.† Matt was mouthing something to Stefan. Elena couldn’t make it out until she heard Stefan’s voice in her mind. He says Damon told him once that this house is like a swap meet, and you can find anything here if you look hard enough. Damon didn’t make that up! I think Mrs. Flowers said it first, and then it sort of got around, Elena returned heatedly. â€Å"When we get the pictures,†Mrs. Flowers was saying brightly, â€Å"we can get the Saitou women to translate the writing.† Meredith final y moved back from Elena. â€Å"And until then we can pray that Bonnie doesn’t get into any trouble,†she said, and her voice and face were composed again. â€Å"I’m starting now.† Bonnie was sure she could stay out of trouble. She’d had that strange dream – the one about shedding her body, and going with Elena to the Island of Doom. Fortunately, it had seemed to be a real out-of-body experience, and not something she had to ponder over and try to find hidden meanings in. It didn’t mean she was doomed or anything like that. Plus, she’d managed to live through another night in this brown room, and Damon had to come and get her out soon. But not before she had a sugarplum. Or two. Yes, she had gotten a taste of one in the story last night, but Marit was such a good girl that she had waited for dinner to have any more. Dinner was obtained in the next story about the Dustbins, which she’d plunged into this morning. But that contained the horror of little Marit tasting her first hand-caught piece of raw liver, fresh from the hunt. Bonnie had hastily pul ed the little star bal off her temple, and had determined not to do anything that could possibly get her on a human hunting range. But then, compulsively, she had counted up her money. She had money. She knew where a shop was. And that meant†¦shopping! When her bathroom break came around, she managed to get into a conversation with the boy who usual y led her to the outdoor privy. This time she made him blush so hard and tug at his earlobe so often that when she begged him to give her the key and let her go by herself – it wasn’t as if she didn’t know the way – he had relented and let her go, asking only that she hurry. And she did hurry – across the street and into the little store, which smel ed so much of melting fudge, toffee being pul ed by hand, and other mouth-watering smel s that she would have known where she was blindfolded. She also knew what she wanted. She could picture it from the story and the one taste Marit had had. A sugarplum was round like a real plum, and she’d tasted dates, almonds, spices, and honey – and there may have been some raisins, too. It should cost five soli, according to the story, but Bonnie had taken fifteen of the smal coppery-looking coins with her, in case of a confectionary emergency. Once inside, Bonnie glanced warily around her. There were a lot of customers in the shop, maybe six or seven. One brown-haired girl was wearing sacking just like Bonnie and looked exhausted. Surreptitiously, Bonnie inched toward her, and pressed five of her copper soli into the girl’s chapped hand, thinking, there – now she can get a sugarplum just like me; that ought to cheer her up. It did: the girl gave her the sort of smile that Mother Dustbin often gave to Marit when she had done something adorable. I wonder if I should talk to her? â€Å"It looks pretty busy,†she whispered, ducking her head. The girl whispered back, â€Å"It has been. Al yesterday I kept hoping, but at least one noble came in as the last one left.† â€Å"You mean you have to wait until the shop’s empty to – ?† The brown-haired girl looked at her curiously. â€Å"Of course – unless you’re buying for your mistress or master.† â€Å"What’s your name?†Bonnie whispered. â€Å"Kelta.† â€Å"I’m Bonnie.† At this Kelta burst into silent but convulsive giggles. Bonnie felt offended; she’d just given Kelta a sugarplum – or the price of one, and now the girl was laughing at her. â€Å"I’m sorry,†Kelta said when her mirth had died down. â€Å"But don’t you think it’s funny that in the last year there are so many girls changing their names to Alianas and Mardeths, and Bonnas – some slaves are even being allowed to do it.† â€Å"But why?†Bonnie whispered with such obvious genuine bewilderment that Kelta said, â€Å"Why, to fit into the story, of course. To be named after the ones who kil ed old Bloddeuwedd while she was rampaging through the city.† â€Å"That was such a big deal?† â€Å"You real y don’t know? After she was kil ed al her money went to the fifth sector where she lived and there was enough left over to have a holiday. That’s where I’m from. And I used to be so frightened when I was sent out with a message or anything after dark because she could be right above you and you’d never know, until – â€Å"Kelta had put al her money into one pocket and now she mimed claws descending on an innocent hand. â€Å"But you real y are a Bonna,†Kelta said, with a flash of white teeth in rather dingy skin. â€Å"Or so you said.† â€Å"Yeah,†Bonnie said feeling vaguely sad. â€Å"I’m a Bonna, al right!†The next moment she cheered up. â€Å"The shop’s empty!† â€Å"It is! Oh, you’re a good-luck Bonna! I’ve been waiting two days.† She approached the counter with a lack of fear that was very encouraging to Bonnie. Then she asked for something cal ed a blood jel y that looked to Bonnie like a smal mold of strawberry Jel -O, with something darker deep inside. Kelta smiled at Bonnie from under the curtain of her long, unbrushed hair and was gone. The man who ran the sweetshop kept looking hopeful y at the door, clearly hoping a free person – a noble – would come in. No one did, however, and at last he turned to Bonnie. â€Å"And what is it you want?†he demanded. â€Å"Just a sugarplum, please?†Bonnie tried hard to make sure her voice didn’t quaver. The man was bored. â€Å"Show me your pass,†he said irritably. It was at that point that Bonnie suddenly knew that everything was going to go horribly wrong. â€Å"Come on, come on, snap it up!†Stil looking at his accounting books, the man snapped his fingers. Meanwhile Bonnie was running a hand over her sack-cloth smock, in which she knew perfectly well there was no pocket, and certainly no pass. â€Å"But I thought I didn’t need a pass, except to cross sectors,†she babbled final y. The man now leaned over the counter. â€Å"Then show me your freedom pass,†he said, and Bonnie did the only thing she could think of. She turned and ran, but before she could reach the door she felt a sudden stinging pain in her back and then everything went blurry and she never knew when she hit the ground. Parents satisfy all their demands and provide love, care and attention and thus create an atmosphere conducive for the overall development of their children. But this description is not suitable for certain households in which either of the parents are drug addicts or alcoholics. This paper is an attempt to analyze the difficulties faced by student learners with alcoholic or drug-attic parents, to identify the impact of parental alcoholism on the life of their children and also to identify appropriate strategies to deal with such children. Challenges fa ced by learners of Alcoholic Parents Many studies have shown that most of the children start identifying the parental drug use and alcoholism between 10 to 12 years of age even though it is subjected to interpersonal variations. There are also cases in which the child identifies some sort of problem in his house even at the age of five but fails to recognize what exactly the problem is because none of the family members will be ready to explain things to him. According to the results of National Household Survey on Drug Abuse in the year 1996 8.3 million children in the United States live with alcoholic or drug addict parents and the most surprising fact is that this contributes to 11 percent of the total child population in the US. Appendix 1 provides a clear idea regarding the nature of substance abuse by parents. 3.8 million children live with alcoholic parents and 2.1 million children live in households with their drug addict parents and 2.4 million children belong to parents wh o are addicted to both alcohol and drugs (see Appendix 1). It is also observed that the children living with substance abusing parents are found in all age groups. Appendix 2 gives the statistics of children who belong to different age groups and who live with drug-attic and alcoholic parents (see Appendix 2). These statistics are quite disturbing and alarming. The drug use and alcoholism of parents put their children in dilemma at early ages which affect their character formation adversely as they grow. The effect may vary from person to person but it is much heavier in the case of certain individuals. There is a global acceptance regarding the fact that parental alcoholism adversely affects the emotional, cognitive and social functions of the children as they are exposed to the parental illness for a long period of time. There is every possibility for such persons to become anti-socials and to be involved in criminal activities and eventually to end up in prison (Frank, 1983, p.22 ). The connectors are means for technical interoperability of SAP Components (written in ABAP or ABAP Objects) and other components (e. g. written in Java, C++, Visual Basic, .NET, etc.). There are many types of SAP Connectors such as SAP .NET Connector, SAP JAVA Connector, SAP DCOM Connector, SAP BUSINESS Connector. SAP Exchange Infrastructure is middleware which can be used by various applications and technologies to integrate with SAP using an open protocol and standards. SAP Exchange Infrastructure (SAP XI) is SAPs enterprise application integration (EAI) software, a component of the Net Weaver product group used to facilitate the exchange of information among a companys internal software and systems and those of external parties. Like other Net Weaver components, SAP XI is compatible with software products of other companies. SAP calls XI an integration broker because it mediates between entities with varying requirements in terms of connectivity, format, and protocols. According to SAP, XI reduces integration costs by providing a common repository for interfaces. The central component of SAP XI is the SAP Integration Server, which facilitates interaction between diverse operating systems and applications across internal and external networked computer systems. Exchange Infrastructure SAP Xi- Architecture XI is well suited for connecting SAP systems with each other and with non-SAP. If the focus is not on SAP systems, other solutions might be a better choice today. SAP XI provides an integrated workflow engine that allows to define adapters to non-XML-protocols and mappings to convert data content from source to target. Mappings and adapters are good as comparable with any other middleware product. Synchronous Asynchronous communication is possible. Cons Web methods are particularly good if u have B2B kind of communication with their Trading Partners product. XI is lacking full-fledged Message Queue compared to other established Middleware products. It lacks in ability to process huge messages but SAP is working on that. It does not have a messaging layer exposed by APIs like IBM MQ-Series. It is not comparable to Tibco in terms of speed. SAP relies on other vendors except for a few adapters. Conclusion: Currently applications in Honeywell are using the various SAP connectors. Migrating the applications integration to SAP Exchange Infrastructure will get cost advantage by avoiding SAP connector licenses. SAP PI Base Engine is priced based on the overall processed message volume expressed in Gigabytes (GB) per month. The applications will also benefit from modern integration functionalities like delivery assurance, once-only, ordered-delivery, prioritization, review of messages and resubmitting after correction. SAP Xi is one of the key building blocks of enterprise SOA architecture provided by SAP. We can continue to leverage towards Honeywell SOA based IT landscape with SAP Xi.

Dusk has fallen, and now it’s just starting to penetrate the canopy of the forest. The trees seem to be dancing to the music of the evening breeze and the gentle rustle of leafs compliment the overall atmosphere. The songs of birds have been totally replaced by an orchestra of crickets and other insects, and I seem to be their sole audience. My eyes peer into the gloom trying to make out what lies ahead, without much success. Soon I realize that I have to let my other senses take over in order continue on. I tread onto what seems to be a sea of moss that covers a large portion of the forest floor, forming a thick green carpet. Each of my steps leaves a green depression, which quickly fill up and erase all evidence of my passing . The soft texture of this carpet invites me to discard my shoes and I do so without much of a second thought. The green sea quickly engulfs my feet and I indulge on the velvety texture that brushes them. Reluctantly, I leave my carpet of moss and make an unsuccessful attempt to find my shoes. I venture onto a thin trail that is suffocated with undergrowth and slowly, start making my way down it. I do not seem to feel any discomfort due to the lack of shoes on the contrary the feeling of the soft moist earth under my feet is an unforgettable experience. The stars are just only starting to peer through the intricate patchwork of leafs and light patches of the forest floor. Fireflies dance like fairies and ignite tiny patches of light, which randomly appears and then suddenly disappears. I stop for a moment, captivated by this dance’s beauty, and then I realize that I have made little progress since I came onto the path. My attention shifts back too my walk and I continue on. The aroma of pine peers into my nostrils and attempts to hypnotize me. Its spell is abruptly broken by the unmistakable sound of flowing water. I get lured to a spot where the tall giants of the forest have parted to make way for a small stream. The reflection caused my the moon’s light causes its surface to emit a queer silver glow which causes the trunks of nearby trees to look like foreboding dark phantoms. Even in this light, I am able to make out the array of smooth pebbles that litter the stream’s bed.

Duchess of Malfi Essay

The Duchess of Malfi written by John Webster was first performed around 1613. A dramatic tragedy, the play is about a forbidden marriage between the Duchess and Antonio her steward, and the wrath of her brothers which leads to many of their deaths. Webster focuses on the role of rank to detail the emotions between relationships in an aristocratic family in a time when class was all important. He uses many distinctive features to convey the substance of the play and its characters, and give the actors playing the roles cues for stage performance. This extract is part of the proposal and marriage scene, one of the biggest emotional dramatic scenes of the play. The duchess is marrying in secret against her brothers wishes; their fear is that she will demean the family’s honour by remarrying. It also forms the most positive aspect of the play, using one of the traditional stage conventions of love, defiance and disapproval (Pacheco and Johnson (2012) pg. 93). This serves to provide a ‘lift’ to an otherwise dark play, and compares the lighter side of the Duchess’ sexual desire to her brother Ferdinand’s. The extract is set at the second half of Act 1 scene 1, the first half being to set the backdrop for the audience and give them a good idea of each character and a good indication of things to come. Specifically, the extract is between the Duchess finding out how Antonio feels about marriage and their union itself; here, the Duchess is convincing Antonio that he is worthy of her, that she is woman enough despite her brothers, her rank and her status as a widow. This is achieved by the features of Webster’s distinctive language and the stage directions (both written and performed through reading). The Duchess uses double meaning in her dialogue, ‘So now the grounds broke/ you may discover what a wealthy mine/ I make you lord of.’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.432-33). She is referring to her own wealth and the value of his rank when they marry. This wordplay is also in the line ‘we are forced to woo because none dare woo us:’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.446) she is again referring to her rank and playing on the word ‘woo’ to mean ‘woe’ (and the irony being that she is wooing him). These are very persuasive lines for Antonio, who feels unworthy of the Duchess despite the traditional gender roles being swapped, and the dominance of the Duchess being prevalent. He realises this with the line ‘These words should be mine,’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.476). There is also wordplay in ‘All discord, without this circumference, / Is only to be pitied and not feared.’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.473). The Duchess is referring to the situation they are in (secret wedding and/or the room), the wedding ring she has given him and to the confinement her brothers wish for her. There could also be reference to how Antonio will be should they marry – a higher rank, but it will be a secret for some time. The duchess is trying to assuage the fear of it all by saying without it there is only pity (for her). The metre and rhythm of the speech in this extract is another distinctive feature. It is un-rhyming blank verse and follows the rules of iambic pentameter except where Webster wants a character to pause, for example, ‘You were ill to sell yourself’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.435) is only three feet of the full five feet line, leaving two for pause before the next line. This puts impact on that line but also on the ones following it. This technique is also echoed in the ‘woo’ line (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.446); the metre of the line is slightly too long, which shows the Duchess’ unwillingness to follow orders. Likewise, the line ‘You have left me heartless, mine is in your bosom’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.453) is too long, giving emphasis on the line and a cue for the actress playing the Duchess to use it for stage direction. The Duchess and Antonio’s dialogue overlaps through most of this extract; it makes them sound as if they are thinking together – giving the audience a feel for the emotional charge between the two characters. We have already seen from earlier in scene 1 that the Duchess is clearly defiant of her brothers, so it is little surprise to see that in response to Antonio’s fear of them she shrugs them off with the line ‘Do not think of them.’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.472). this confirms the audiences view of her as being strong and resilient but also somewhat naive, and also gives them a clue of what is to come, especially when she follows with the lines ‘Yet, should they know it, time will easily/ scatter the tempest.’ (Webster, (2010 [1623]) 1.1.476). This dramatic irony confirms what the audience knows but Antonio does not: that her brothers are unaware of their impending marriage. Indeed, with these lines Webster is inviting the audience to fear the brother’s reaction too after hearing their earlier death threat to the Duchess. (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.298-344) The depth of each character and difference of rank is shown in this extract by Webster’s use of figurative language. The Duchess continuously shows her determination and sprit, something which continues throughout the play – even to her death. And poor Antonio, who despite being honest and loyal, is overwhelmed at the turn of events and the metaphoric swapping of gender roles to the point where he is seeking solace in the Duchess’s words and is happy to be deluded ‘Would not have savoured flattery’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.478). He is painfully aware that he is not equal in rank but will be in marriage, and his fears exaggerate her strength ‘These words should be mine,/ And all of the parts you have spoke, if some part of it/ Would not have savoured flattery.’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.476-8) As for performance, the extract only provides one written key stage direction ‘(she kisses him)’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.468). However, there is plenty in the reading of the extract to relate to performance. This also leaves room for interpretation in relation to performance possibilities. The pace of the dialogue changes depending on which character is speaking, for example, lines 445-462 are full of short syllables which quicken the rhythm of the metre to make it energetic and erratic, ‘And fearfully equivocates,’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.448). It could serve to make the Duchess sound tense yet determined, and she could be sort of ranting in her attempts to convince Antonio. These lines also provide many words that can be used as stage direction, for example while she is speaking between lines 445 and 451 she could be pacing the stage and using her hands to emphasise her point ‘The misery of†¦ Thing it is not’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.445-52). Also in ‘Go, go brag,’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.452), she could point off stage as if inviting him to leave, either in an angry or defeated way. After, in ‘You have left me heartless’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.453), her hands could go to her heart, and then onto his with ‘mine is in your bosom’ and leave them there for ‘you do tremble (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.453-54). She could shake him at ‘awake, awake, man,’ (Webster, (2010[1623]) 1.1.459). The pace slows down again after Antonio has promised to protect her reputation; the syllables become longer and more even and written commas slow the dialogue to make it measured. This follows to the end of the extract so we can see that the Duchess is calmer and happy now that Antonio has accepted her proposal. This should reflect in the way that the person playing the Duchess should perform, especially when she is shrugging off the fear of her brothers, as it is almost nonchalant. The stage set up should have enough room for there to be complete focus on the characters and no superfluous scenery – perhaps only what is required to make it obvious what the room is, plus the table and chair for Antonio and the curtains for Cariola to hide behind. If the Duchess is pacing the stage while she rants there should be adequate room for this, and Antonio could follow behind her. Indeed, if he is seeking solace in her words, the actor may wish to appear meek (and therefore filling the gender and rank role) by following her blindly but also allowing her to turn to place her hands on him where necessary. In all, we can see how the distinctive features of Webster’s language have brought the play into being. The use of dramatic irony, metre and rhythm, imagery and figurative language to convey emotion, bring scenes to life and help the audiences perception. Webster also especially does this in his use of figurative language to create stage directions for the cast, which in turn helps them to set and convey the scene. With the play only having little written stage directions, Webster leaves the play open for the actor’s interpretation, and its possibilities onstage.

These include: Tragedy, Comedy and Romance. However overall The Tempest is most commonly known as a Tradgicomedy, which encompasses all these genres by having multiple plots within the play, which are then linked together to make the overall play. The plot suggests that the play is a tragedy by which there is a scene in which much destruction takes place and the themes of death and downfall are seen. However it could be seen as a comedy because there is a lot of disjunction, because it starts with the wrecking of the royal ship on the rock of an island. Commotion is a major part of this. While all this happens Miranda looks on from the island and comments on the wreckage as a brave vessel-Who had, no doubt, some noble creature in her-Dashed all to pieces! As this is the beginning of the play we can only assume that in the confusion the ship had crashed on the rocks and while doing so all aboard her had been killed. Next we find that Prospero, controller of the island, had been forcefully and to some extent unfairly sent away from his home in Milan, as he was the Duke of Milan. His brother, who is described as The ivy which had hid my princely trunk, replaced him. So from this we deduce that Prospero forced the boat to break up on the island in order to punish the Duke of Milan, the King of Naples and all the others who did not help him. The theme of the tragedy is continued with the introduction of Caliban, the slave of Prospero on the island, my slave. We find that Prospero is very violent towards him, threatening Caliban with cramps, Side-stitches that shall pen thy breath up. UrchinsThou shall be pinchedeach pinch more stinging/That bees that madeem. These violent tendencies towards Caliban help further realise the image of this play being a tragedy. In line 388 Ferdinand is first introduced to us as one of the Royal party who is lost and alone. We find he has been separated from all his other travellers. We discover that he is the Prince and the son of the King of Naples and heir to the thrown. This disheartens him and leaves him crying at his loss. He is led by Ariel towards Miranda. For Miranda this is the second man she has ever seen in her life, and describes him first as a spirit. Then when they meet falls in love with him, this is the beginning of the Romance aspect of the play. However just as Miranda and Ferdinand start to realise that they have fallen in love with each other Prospero stops them and decides to lock up Ferdinand like a prisoner, hes a traitor.-Come, Ill manacle thy neck and feet together. Sea-water shalt thou drink; they food shall be The fresh-brook mussels, withered roots, and husks, Miranda takes part in the first confrontation in order to make sure Prospero does not treat Ferdinand too harshly, she sa ys, Make not too rash a trial of him. At the start of the Second act the main body of the Royal party emerges and first to speak is Gonzalo who is very optimistic, nearly humorous, in his optimism. He says everyone should be merry because they all survived the ordeal, and it is but for a miracle that they survived. Sebastian and Antonio then tell jokes amongst themselves about Gonzalos behaviour. They continue to be quick of tongue and make comments that the audience would have found funny. ADRIAN The air breathes upon us here most sweetly. SEBASTIAN As if it had lungs, and rotten ones. GONZALO How lush and lusty the grass looks! How green! ANTONIO The ground indeed is tawny. We find that Alonso thinks that his son is dead, because he has found most of the rest of his Royal party except for his son the Prince Ferdinand. This makes him down heartened, as now he has no heir to his thrown and no son. With the loss of the heirs to the thrown Sebastian and Antonio want to overthrow the current controllers of the royal society and take charge themselves, so they begin to plot and form an idea of how to kill the King. However Gonzalo, who wakes and shouts Preserve the King! cheats them. In Act two Scene two the comedy side to the play is introduced. In this section Trinculo the jester and Stephano the drunken butler enter and come across Caliban while he is getting wood. Caliban hears the sound of thunder and hides underneath his cloak. Trinculo enters and since it is now raining he decides although he can see a pair of legs coming from under the cloak and an odd smell of fish in the air. He will hide under the cloak with Caliban. To add to this Stephano comes in. He is singing and evidently drunk. He assumes the four legs under the cloak is some sort of monster and because of his singing is in fits so to calm it he give it some of his alcohol and because Caliban has never has alcohol before it has an immediate affect on him. These three characters form the base for the humorous part of the play and have also their own separate plot to distinguish them from the other plots in the play. In Act three we go back to the Romantic part of the play, Ferdinand is working hard at his new position as a slave, and Miranda comes to visit him while he works. The mistress which I serve quickens whats dead, Prospero is not meant to know about this meeting, My father is hard at study. Pray now, rest yourself; Hes safe for these three hours. They seem to have a competition in which they compete for who can give each other the most adoring complement. What Ferdinand and Miranda do not know is that Prospero is being a kind and loving father in setting up his daughter with Ferdinand. He is fully aware of what he is doing and has control over it although it does not seem as in fact this is true. Ferdinand promises to marry Miranda and since Alonzo seemingly is dead it makes Ferdinand king. They make regeneration possibilities on such a small island and tears, a pure physical response are bared. In Act three Scene two Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo are preparing to overthrow Prospero and become the owners of the island with Caliban to help them, as he knows where everything is and where the wood is and where the water is. In scene three we find Gonzalo weakened and demoralised because he is exhausted and Alonso because he as lost his son, in this last scene Prospero enacts the punishments that he has been building up to. We find that Prospero sorts out all the characters, and there is a marriage between Miranda and Ferdinand that is settled. He also re-unites all the characters in the play and brings them all together for the final scene.

Political Dynasty Essay The Philippine Constitution is a Social Contract which embodies the fundamental principles and policies, according to which the Filipino people are governed by the State. The fundamental principles are abstract and as such they cover every aspect of the life of the Filipino people; while the fundamental policies cover specific areas of application of those principles. The fundamental principles remain fixed and permanent, but the policies built upon those principles can be modified or repealed by legislation to suit the needs of the times. The title is product of my out of the box philosophizing about the provisions of Section 1 and Section 26 taken together of Article II of our Constitution. I must say that philosophizing does not tell us my conclusions and/or thoughts are right or wrong, true or false, but it has certainly given me the basis upon which to present my meta-understanding of Section 1 and Section 26: Article II, Section 1 says: â€Å"The Philippines is a democratic and republican state. Sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them. † This is the most basic principle of the Constitution, and it refers to a natural law as formulated and accepted in the mind; it refers also to essential truth upon which other truths are based. Article II, Section 26: â€Å"The State shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service, and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law. † This is a policy built upon the principle of Section 1, and it refers to a planned line of conduct in the light of which individual decisions on political dynasties are made and coordination is achieved. Moreover, political dynasties refer to the line of politicians of the same families. Every coin has two inseparable opposite sides – the head and the tail yet they complement each other as they are opposed to each other to constitute only one coin. Similarly, the political issue on dynasty has two opposite yet complementary sides (a) â€Å"the principle of political dynasty† of Section 1 and (b) the â€Å"the policy of political dynasty† of Section 26. Both Sections constitute one Article II. The policy of Section 26 names the specific area of application of the principle of Section 1 of the same Article II. The policy of Section 26 is built upon the basic principle of Section 1. Moreover, the fundamental principle of Section 1 remain fixed and permanent, but policies of Section 3 can be are modified or repealed by legislation to suit the needs and demands of the times. The People: The Creators and Masters of Political Dynasties The phrase â€Å"sovereignty resides in the people, and all government authority emanates from them† clearly shows that the people are the habitat of the sovereignty. However, â€Å"people† have two distinct yet mutually complementary meanings, namely, â€Å"people as electorate† which is the source of political power of elected politicians and â€Å"people as corporate nation† which is the reason for being of elected politicians. These â€Å"dual meanings of people† effectively signify that the elected politicians are â€Å"public servants† of the people; hence the people are their â€Å"boss and master† in our democratic and republican state, not the way around By virtue of their sovereign power, the people are superior to any and all existing political dynasties, whose reason for being is service to their masters, the people. On moral grounds, the people must be awakened to the reality that they are the boss of political dynasties, and therefore they have no reason to fear the, before, during, and after political elections. Centrality of Morality in the Constitution The centrality of morality to our Constitution is evident in the Preamble, in the imploration to Almighty God for aid to build a just and humane society and to establish a Government that shall embody the Filipino ideals and aspirations and promote their common good under a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace. The rest of the Constitution revolves around these moral ideals and moral values. These are the moral foundations of the Social Ethics Society. There are socio-economic phenomena in many areas of the country where the life-style and the exercise of political power by political dynasties is betrayal of public trust, because it is not in accord with the following moral imperatives and criteria of right and wrong in public service: â€Å"Public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must at all times accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency; act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest life†. (Article X on Accountability) Every elected politician in the public service is bound to abide by those mandates. Congress had passed anti-graft and anti-corruption laws, e. g. RA No. 6713, also known as Code of Ethics for Government Officials and Employees, in the public service. However, it appears that many of our elected politicians pay only â€Å"lip service† to anti-Graft and Anti-Corruptions laws. For instance, there are widespread phenomena of bribery and corruption in the public service, reportedly perpetuated by corrupt politician, many of whom are allegedly members of political dynasties. Centrality of Morality to Legality The Preamble provides the moral grounds and the foundation of ethical politics of several Articles of the Constitution. No statutory law is enforceable if it is unconstitutional; and the Constitution cannot be enforced if it is immoral. The bottom line any enabling law on political dynasty is legally binding upon the Filipinos, only if it is constitutional and moral. A law that is moral is always constitutional, but a law that is constitutional is not necessarily moral. A Moral and Ethical Proposal I believe the policy of Section 26 which â€Å"prohibits political dynasties as may be defined by law† has two distinct opposite sides, (1) â€Å"the letter of the Constitution† which is the legalistic side, and (2) the â€Å"spirit of the Constitution† which is the ethical side. The pro-political dynasty advocates and promoters behave in accord with legal politics. Their action is legal so long as there is no law defining and enabling the constitutional prohibition against political dynasties. Therefore, the anti-dynasty advocates and promoters should stand on moral and ethical grounds against political dynasties. It is my proposal on moral and ethical grounds that the anti-dynasty advocates should develop and promote the concept of â€Å"political dynasty of the people† based on the principle of Section 1 face-to-face the â€Å"political dynasties of oligarchs† based on the policy of Section 26 but built upon the principle of Section 1. When there is a conflict between a principle and its policy, the principle should prevail over its policy. Moral, Ethical, and Legal Practices in Politics Moral and ethical are similar in meaning in that they both have to do with the difference between right and wrong. They are dissimilar in meaning in that ethical tends to refer to a code, system, theory, or standard of judging rightness or wrongness of moral behavior; whereas moral tends to refer to more concrete choices and issues that arouse strong feelings. In other words, moral refers to good and evil, while ethical refers to right and wrong. Because of the untruthful disclosure of his SALN per Code of Ethics, former SC Chief Justice Renato Corona was found ethically wanting for which he was impeached, despite his superior legalistic knowledge of law; Hence, we could say that â€Å"what is moral is always ethical, but what is ethical is not necessarily moral. † Hence, when an elected politician acts according to RA 6714, his behavior is ethical as well as legal â€Å"what is ethical is always legal, but what is legal is not necessarily ethical†. The Pursuit of Ethical Politics Our major problem in the pursuit of ethical politics is the lack of political will on the part of the people as electorate. Let us awaken and educate their political consciousness, and empower their political will by making them conscious of their being the political dynasty that is superior over all existing political dynasties of oligarchs† per mandate of Article II, Section 1 that the people are the habitat of sovereign power, but the exercise of such pwer is delegated and vested upon elected politicians. Assume that Congress would never pass the law enabling the policy against political dynasties; let us then resort to the principle of Section 1 in Article II. This principle does not require any enabling law because it is precisely the ultimate basis of all enabling laws. This is the principle why the political candidates try to win the votes of the people during political campaigns. We have indeed laws prescribing the requirements of the policy to vote. The Social Ethics Society can start the movement to marginalize the political dynasties,, if not altogether eliminate them eventually from the political landscape of the Philippine.
